Affidavit of Julius Rosenfeld on the events of 20 March 1933

Members of the SA and SS dragged the butcher Julius Rosenfeld and his son from the Dortmund stockyards through the streets of the city to a brickyard at the Voss pit. Rosenfeld and his son were lined up against the wall several times and threatened with pistols. They were forced to sing the 'Horst Wessel Song' and were greeted by a rain of blows when they arrived at the brickyard. The young Rosenfeld was forced to set fire to his father's beard with a burning newspaper. After this, father and son were compelled to jump into a clay-pit. After five hours, the elder Rosenfeld was released and sent home under the condition that within two hours he bring a slaughtered ox to his tormentors as a ransom for the release of his son.
